Oyster Studies in Fine Domestic Porcelain
by Jeffrey Mathias
My oyster sculptures are contemporary studies of Crassostrea virginica, created in fine domestic porcelain and shaped by years of dedicated, singular focus. Each piece explores the oyster’s profound dichotomy: a rugged, weathered exterior guarding an interior of unexpected elegance; a creature both fragile and unbreakably resilient. Its asymmetry, its layered history of tides and time, and its role as both survivor and sentinel of our coastal waters all become sculptural language.
What began as small, hand-built forms has evolved into a disciplined practice that merges spontaneity with technical precision, translating the oyster’s contradictory nature into contemporary works that honor its beauty, strength, and complexity.
Viewings are available by appointment at my home Gallery on Tilghman Island, Maryland. For those nearby, I also welcome the opportunity to bring select pieces directly into your Talbot County home, allowing you to see how the work lives within your own space. Additionally, select pieces are represented by fine galleries, including The Sportsman’s Gallery in Charleston, South Carolina, offering an elegant venue to encounter the sculptures in person.
